My house was built applying the BRK 9120B smoke alarms. A handful of months after moving in, they would go off in the middle of the night for no apparent purpose (there were no fires). Contacted BRK buyer Service and was told the 9120 was susceptible to power fluctuations and that the power corporations were known to 'do things' in the midle of the night. To test I disconnected the electrical connection and ran on battery only for a year - no false alarms. I ordered the 7010B to replace them and so far so good. The replacement was especially effortless as the connection plug is the same. I did have to remove and replace the mounting ring but that was only two screws per unit, and even then you only had to loosen the screws.
I bought various BRK 7010Bs to replace the 4120Bs and 9120Bs that came with my residence when it was built. As I've read in many reviews, both the 4120B and the 9120B would "cry wolf" from cooking and in the middle of the night and randomly chirp. I had sufficient so I did a little bit of analysis on smoke alarms and sensing technologies.
I chose the 7010B considering that I liked what I saw with the photoelectric sensor. Photoelectric sensing engineering senses smoke particles from smoldering fires whereas ionization detects combustion particles from quick flaming fires. It turns out that a vast majority of household fire deaths are from the smoke itself, not the fire. Also, most household fires start as slow smoldering fires. Ionization detectors are just about absolutely incapable of sensing smoke from smoldering fires. It would only make sense to me that my smoke alarm could essentially sense actual fire smoke and not just my cooking.
The other cause I chose the 7010B was that it carries the very same simple functions as the 9120B such as the slide out battery compartment, the combined test/silence button, and the ease of installation.
Installation was particularly simple also. All I had to do was replace the trim ring as the plug was exactly the identical. I can not imagine the wire harness getting tough to replace either if you do your personal residence electrical function.
So I installed the alarms and that was that till it was time for the real thing (even more or much less). I had some pasta boil more than on the stove and the burner caught on fire. It wasn't key, possibly 6 to eight inch flames, but a fire nonetheless. I was in the kitchen when it all went down and saw the entire issue. It was maybe ten seconds from the time I saw the flames pop up to the time the smoke alarm in the next space shrieked to life (along with the rest of the interconnected detectors through the house).
